Forecasters predict that Isaias will intensify to a category 2 hurricane by Thursday morning, with the potential to intensify further to a category 3 or 4 storm. The storm is projected to hit the Gulf Coast of the United States, likely in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama or Florida, by Friday or Saturday, bringing with it severe winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges that could cause flooding and landslides.
As of its latest update, the National Hurricane Center estimates that Isaias will reach hurricane strength by the start of Thursday. The storm is expected to bring up to 6 inches (150mm) of rain to parts of the Gulf Coast, potentially causing significant flooding in urban areas and smaller landslides in coastal regions. Additionally, the National Weather Service has issued Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches for the Gulf Coast.
The formation of Isaias represents a significant development, ending a relatively quiet hurricane season that has been attributed to the presence of El Niño, a climate pattern characterized by increased temperatures in parts of the atmosphere. El Niño is believed to have suppressed hurricane development by creating more wind shear over the Caribbean and Atlantic, which can weaken storms before they have a chance to intensify.
Isaias, the ninth tropical storm of the Atlantic season, marks a return to normalcy after the relatively inactive season, with the National Hurricane Center expecting an eventual return to more typical hurricane activity in the coming weeks.
